Burgard Vocational High School Summer Enrichment Program

What is it?  An Automotive Majors Program geared towards 9th grade students who will be entering Burgard Vocational High School in September. They must be 14 years of age and in good academic standings and meet eligibility requirements.

The program is a 6-week session.  Students earn a summer stipend by working, they will earn one vocational credit, by visiting sites throughout WNY, working in the auto shop and completing career skill classes.  The program will be treated as work, half day on site visits and half day classroom. They will fill out time cards, be tested, required to write a profile and be on best behavior.  Enrichment in english, math and social studies will help students achieve academic success.

In the past, the following facilities have agreed to assist us by allowing the youth to tour their facilities:

Joe Basil Chev Dunlop Tire Buffalo Truck
American Axle Jim Ball Pontiac Hutchins Auto
Buffalo Transp. Museum West Herr Chev ECCC
Lancaster Motor Sports Park Bison Glass Glen Campbell
Mac Tools Towne Ford Small Boat Harbor

This is a first of its kind in the nation.  It has been followed with interest by school systems in California and Wisconsin.  Out students will be monitored for a 5-year period.  Our reason is to help create a good citizen, employable in our area and able to advance to higher levels.  This is part of our continuing efforts towards the Auto Tech Competition, the WNY School Systems Youth Career Days and our youth.

Program partners are:

. Buffalo PUblic Schools

. UAW-GM Center for Human Resources

. Buffalo Employment and Training Services

. Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association

Funding for the program is through BETS-Buffalo Employment and Training Services.

These businesses have opened their doors to greet these students into the work force.  Students who were in the program last year now advance to in-house shadow programs.  They will spend time in these facilities observing every-day happenings alongside technicians, parts clerks, salespeople, etc.

Burgard is currently pursuing NATEF certification for the Auto Program.

Shortly the program will start again, into its 5th year.  This year the program will focus on Juniors & Seniors introducing them into the work force.  More info to follow as program is fine tuned.
